We hear a lot (and we’ve talked a lot) about hydroxy acids, retinol and vitamins in skincare, but Enzymes not so much. So what are they? Fruit Enzymes are a type of protein, and as the name suggests, they’re derived from fruits such as pineapple, kiwi or papaya. This might sound like a harmless breakfast salad but their role in skincare is the power of exfoliation. Have you ever eaten a pineapple or kiwi fruit and felt tingles in your mouth after? That’s the enzymes at work, fascinating huh?
The skin naturally rids itself of the most outer layers of the skin. This process is constantly happening through enzymes our own body produces. However, when this process is hindered it can lead to uneven skin texture e.g. lumps of skin cells, and a dull, lacklustre complexion. Both Glycolic Acid and Enzymes speed up this process in a similar fashion by breaking down the intercellular bonds (or desmosomes). Glycolic penetrates at a deeper level, whereas enzymes focus on the outermost layers of the skin (stratum corneum) and enzymes are most effective at a neutral pH, therefore are a touch gentler. If you find acids such as Glycolic or Salicylic irritating or do not work well with your skin, enzymes give you a different option to chemically exfoliate.

The Anti Ageing 3 Fruit Enzymes Exfoliating Scrub & Mask is a double double tasker. No, that wasn’t a typo. It functions as both a scrub AND a mask, but it also exfoliates using both Fruit Enzymes of pineapple (bromelain), papaya (papain) and kiwi (actinidain) AND scrub particles made from aluminium oxide - the same particles used in microdermabrasion. The enzymes gently break down the bonds of dead skin cells and offer anti-inflammatory properties while the scrub particles delicately polish the skin, removing impurities. Leave it on for 10 minutes as a mask to give those enzymes more munching time, then lightly scrub in a circular motion prior to washing off.

The gentle exfoliation of Fruit Enzymes is particularly beneficial as we age and our natural skin renewal process takes a downturn. Production of new skin cells slows down as we get older and this can lead to a dull and tired-looking complexion. Regular fruit enzyme exfoliation can help re-energise this cycle and keep skin looking radiant, healthy and fresh.
What's more is that regular exfoliation benefits the rest of your routine too. Because your skin isn’t cluttered with debris and dead skin cells, the products you use afterwards absorb more easily into the skin, enhancing their effectiveness.
